Tonight I went to hear a palaeontologist at our local Fossil Park explain how penguins evolved, beginning just after the dinosaurs disappeared. This skeleton of one of today's penguins (backed up by a model of a sabre-toothed cat) reminded me of one of the most telling sets of statistics that I've yet encountered - hair-raising stuff - in Robert Ardrey's seminal book, "African Genesis," in a chapter headed "A room full of bones." Read it if you want statistics to come alive for you!
