Guns were essential, trophies less so, for often they were needed for defense or to provide sustenance. And ultimately, the female of the last pair of hippos in this area died and her lonely mate became aggressive, killed a farm worker and had to be shot.
Life a century back had its attractions, I think nostalgically, but also many uncomfortable realities.
