National, endangered

Our national bird, the blue crane, is endangered, mainly through loss of habitat. Near Aurora, a pair breeds annually, producing just one chick. But we were astonished to realise that once every year there is a 'gathering of the clan' when as many as 30 can be seen, in the field usually occupied by the 'locals' - an acknowledged phenomenon, without an obvious reason. I do hope that this area continues to be safe for them.
