It's difficult - no, impossible - to grow anything here that can't survive the depredations of the dune mole-rats, rodents the size of fat cats with sabre-like teeth, that eat the roots of almost everything, pulling them down into a network of knee-deep burrows (I've seen a prized metre-high sapling pulled down in seconds.) These are the molehills in a typical field, opposite my home.
