Whales

It's really difficult to capture whales as they breach, unless you have a wonderful camera (and I have a very ordinary one.) This pair of Southern Right whales (it's breeding season) was 100 metres away but we did occasionally see the typically shaped tails as they breached.

Just off Shelley Point (an upmarket holiday area) one popped up to inspect us, but left quickly.

Then one scarred and barnacled whale surfaced not more than 20 metres off...

...but wasn't interested in the boat, just kept travelling. "Hold your course" we said - a close encounter with one of these huge creatures can be fairly damaging. All in all we saw 14 in the course of our trip.
