Sandveld vista

Geologically speaking, the Sandveld is very new indeed. The hills in this view were once islands and the sand in the foreground was sea-bed. Erly settlers made a living gathering salt from "pans" where the rainwater drew the salt from the dunes, and evaporated. The result is a unique and strangely beautiful ecology.
