We had a magnificent palm tree, next to our house - Vic's pride and joy. Sadly, it didn't flourish after the first year or two we were there, and last year blew over in a gale and had to be carted away. Turned out that the tenant who had been in the house before we bought it had made an aviary around the palm tree; his budgies had chewed the trunk away all round the base, killing it slowly by starvation. Today I visited the poor old tree where it had been dumped; it is becoming a base for grasses and moss, except for some bits of the massive trunk that I am using as tables in the garden.
